Context 638 represents a layer of sandy silt identified beneath context c630, and also truncated by the cut c631, in the sondage located south of the wall c601. It may corresponds to the earliest phase of occupation in this sector, as it seems to directly overlay the natural substratum.
The deposit contained traces of ash and small quantities of charcoal - less abundant than in the overlying context 630 - as well as fragments of clay building material, ceramic sherds, a ground stone and faunal remains.
