Interpretation
Context 627 was initially interpreted as a posthole, as were the nearby contexts 625 and 628. However, after excavating the entire sondage, it became clear that these three contexts, slightly disturbed by animal burrows, form part of the same stratigraphic unite.
For description and interpretation, see Context 625.
[Original notes from context sheet : c627 is a posthole under c616 and next to the wall c601. It is supposed to be a round wood stick to strengthen the wall. It is at the west side of c625 (another posthole), and at the limit of the west wall (18/07/2023). After excavated, it is a gray ashi layer with lots of charcoal, seems like there used to have burn activity in this area, suppose to do something prepare for building wall. The depth of the layer is about 2-5 cm. It is similar with c625 and c628 but heavily disturbed by animals. So there is some animals bone in this layer. The soil is ashey and gray, due to animals disturb. There is a "S" tubbel with brownish gray soil in the layer which is made by animals.]
