Interpretation

Context 630 corresponds to a layer found in the sondage adjacent to the southern side of wall c601, directly beneath the thin layer c625. Like the upper context c625, it is truncated by pit 631. Context 630 is a stratified layer of ash, characterised by multiple closely packed layers of ashy material, with numerous charcoal inclusions, forming a flat layer at its uppermost part. No in situ burnin has been identified. This layer may correspond to an area of combustion refuse, levelled and spread over time, or to a more isolated event.

A small number of finds have been retrieved, including shells, ground stones and pottery sherds that could date to the Late Neolithic Phase I.

[original notes from the context sheet : The layer c630 is next to the wall, which including many layers of ash. It supposes that human burn something and spread the ash around continuously until it became a flat layer. The quantity of finds is small, and the pottery is Late Neolithic Phase I. C630 is cut by c631 and below c601. 1) The ash could be abandonned at this area again and again and spread at smoothly continuously. 2) Human just burn something regularly at this area, and smooth out the ash after burning. There are lots of charcoal at make the soil dark bur the ash layer didn't disturb c631 which is a clear round area.
1) The c631 was a structure bulid before c630 so it was already exist and the fire didn't destroy it. Only some charcoal remain at the coundary which can be see on the plan. 2) The c631 is a cut after 630, so it just truncate c630, so there is absolute no ash in c631.]
