Description
Occupation layer associated with the wall c601 (?)
Certainty of interpretation
Interpretation
Context 616 corresponds to a layer situated beneath context 604. Like the latter, it is positioned against structure c601. It also covers the ashy layers c625, c630, possibly related to the foundation of the wall c601, as well as cut c631. While agricultural activy did not significantly impact this layer, animal burrowing caused some disturbance, particularly near the top. The junction with the underlying layer c630 is diffuse, becoming progressively more greyish and ashy.
This context is characterized by a heterogeneous sandy silt with a few inclusions of charcoal, along with a lens of ashy soil, located against the eastern wall of the sondage, recorded as c612. Initially considered a separate layer, c612 is now regarded as part of c616.
Artefacts are less abudant than in the overlying context c604. However, several chipped stones, ground stones, pottery sherds, fragments of clay building material, as well as animal bones and shells have been recovered.
Based on these observations, c616 could correspond to an occupation layer related to the wall c601. However, extending the excavation beyond the sondage could help refine this interpretation.
