Interpretation

Context 619 corresponds to the soil found inside the burial, beneath the stone cover.  It is hypothesized that this layer is the result of infiltration rather than an intentional fill placed after the deposition of the deceased, due to its loose compaction, coumpound bedding, and uneven distribution within the inner space of the pit. Specifically, the layer is thin between the stones and the bones in the area of the left femur and the pelvis, thicker arouns the torso and at the edgesa. And the is eveidence of movement in some bones (such as the right scapula, ribs, left coxal bone, etc.). Several finds were recoverd from this layer, including pottery and clay building material. A flint (c619 #6) and seven shells (c619 #13, #16, #22, #23, #24, #25, #26) were recorded separately. These finds, found near the jaw and right arm of the skeleton, cannot be definitely identified as intentional deposit associated with individual c623. Additionally, a large pottery sherd (c619 #9) was found under the stone cover near the southern edge of the pit. Given that this layer primarily results from infiltration, we propose that it has blended with the soil from layer c629, which corresponds to the fill found between the stones of the cover.

Notes or comments

Some human bones were also retrieved. They probably belong to the skeleton c623 and moved by animals. The osteological analysis would help to confirm this hypothesis.
