Description

Fill of the burial F2, covering the skeleton C603.

Interpretation

Only a few centimetres (0.09 m) of the fill of burial F1 were observed, as the bones were uncovered during the mechanical removal of the topsoil/subsoil layer (C600). The upper boundary of the fill was not clearly visible, and no distinct difference could be observed between the burial fill and the surrounding context into which the grave pit was cut (C605). The fill consists of a greyish-brown clayey silt, relatively coarse in texture, with frequent inclusions of unsorted limestone gravels (less than 5 cm in size). Occasional roots and snail shells indicate bioturbation, which, along with modern ploughing, has affected the preservation of the human remains. A small number of bone fragments in secondary position were recovered from the layer. Pottery and clay building material (CBM) were also found, although none could be confidently associated with the burial. However, three shells (606, #10, #15, and #18) and a chipped stone artefact (606, #11) were recorded separately. While these may have originally been part of the grave goods, the disturbed state of the burial and the homogeneity between the fill and the surrounding context prevent any definitive attribution.
